Deciding to Replace Air Conditioning / HVAC Systems

Why should I purchase a high efficiency Air Conditioning and Heating system?

You know your HVAC equipment has a lot of miles on it. Maybe close to 10 years …possibly over 20 years . But lately you can hear the air conditioning system laboring or making noise trying to deliver the cooling or heating you require for your home comfort. There are hot spots or cold spots in your home and your utility bills – you don’t even want to think about the steady, progressive climb in dollars spent each month.

You’ve had a number of air conditioning repair visits and the technician did what he could to keep it going, but small adjustments and minor fixes are not going to carry it for much longer. You know you are going to have to make a decision – soon. Try taking the online Energy Star Yardstick survey to check your score. If it comes in under five you are probably paying too much on your energy bills and it’s time to research new HVAC equipment and take action.

Perhaps you are asking yourself “why should I purchase a high efficiency system air conditioning and heating system” or “my neighbor says I only need 13 SEER” or “another company said my air conditioner is still working” and I think you guys are just trying to sell me something I don’t need. Does this sound familiar?

Modern Service and Anderson Service are about creating a higher standard of living while also creating a return on your investment. Your neighbor is correct, you only have to buy 13 SEER HVAC system, which we also sell, and it seems initially cheaper than the higher (let’s say 18 SEER) system that we quoted you; however, 13 SEER is not an investment, it will not make you more comfortable, it will not save you money, it will not pay you back over time, and it will not add value to your house. It is not recommended by the government or the utility companies and therefore may not qualify for any rebates. It is not quieter, and in the end it will cost you more money to own a lower efficiency system.

Although your current system may still be working it is incredibly inefficient and you have the right to and deserve to be educated; putting off buying a new air conditioner will only cost you more money down the road and continue the monthly energy drain on your wallet.

Manufacturers and the government have created incentives to help the concerned homeowner lower their energy bills. Once you factor in the rebates and tax credits, the higher efficiency HVAC equipment, while more expensive than lower SEER equipment, provides you with an investment that creates positive cash flow while making you more comfortable all year long.

Other companies will try to make you think efficiency does not matter because they do not have a manufacturer offering rebates and they may not even be certified by FP&L to offer you their rebate. Why would FP&L not even recognize 13 SEER HVAC equipment on their rebate chart that progressively increases with SEER rating?

You can buy something that costs you money up front and continues costing money throughout the lifespan of the HVAC equipment, while not improving your living conditions at all; or you can make an upfront investment that will help pay for itself over the lifetime of the equipment, The higher SEER equipment also raises the value of your house by more than the cost of the system; all while making you more comfortable and improving your living conditions.

The decision is up to you, we are not trying to push a more expensive air conditioning unit. We want our customers to be educated and make the best decision possible. Make sure your HVAC company provides you with proper documentation from an independent testing company such as the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute – www.ahridirectory.org to insure that you get the rebates you deserve.

One big question to ask is; are you looking for the lowest cost or the lowest price. Naturally, most people ask what the difference is. Price is what you pay for the system today, cost is what the system will cost you over the next 10-12 years or longer. We may not have the lowest price, but we very often provide a solution that has the lowest cost.

Return on investment – this applies to a full time resident. Even if you do not need to purchase an air conditioner right now, let’s say you have a 9 year old system but it is 13 SEER and it is still under warranty for another year, how would you like an investment that would make you 10 times more comfortable and bring you savings (make you money) over the next 12 years. Keep in mind that saving money also qualifies as making money (when you save a dollar, you make a dollar, when you earn a dollar you pay taxes and make .70 or less). Currently a 13 or less SEER air conditioner costs you at least half of your electric bill assuming you use it an average amount. To add insult to injury, while using this much electricity it is not actually making you comfortable, it is only satisfying a need. To truly be comfortable you need to control the humidity in your home and you cannot efficiently do this with an inefficient air conditioner.
